Sickle Cell Insights

What is sickle cell disease?

Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. It causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down, leading to various health complications.

How is sickle cell disease inherited?

Sickle cell disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning it occurs when a child inherits two abnormal hemoglobin genes, one from each parent. These abnormal genes can come in different forms, but the most common type of sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the HBB gene, which provides instructions for making a protein called hemoglobin beta. When a person inherits two copies of this mutated gene (one from each parent), they have sickle cell disease. If a person inherits only one copy of the mutated gene, they are carriers of the disease but typically do not show symptoms.

What are the symptoms of sickle cell disease?

Sickle cell disease symptoms include pain crises, anemia, infections, delayed growth, vision problems, swelling of hands and feet, frequent urination, jaundice, stroke risk, and acute chest syndrome. Symptoms vary, and prompt medical attention is crucial for management.
